Незважаючи на загальну помилку, форма далеків не відображала звичайну обідню сільничку, вона була створена, щоб приховувати оператора, який сидів усередині. Видумав її дизайнер Реймонд Кусик (1928-2013). Далек був заввишки 167 см, завдовжки 121 см і зашириною 91 см, а важив він 152 кг. Оператор усередині далека керував зброєю, оком і вогниками, а озвучував далека актор, що перебував за кадром.
